In the movie The Last Wave, David Burton, a white Australian lawyer, reluctantly takes the case of defending a group of aborigines who are accused of murdering a fellow aborigine named Chris Lee. Chris Lee was a teacher in a local school and was loved by the aboriginal community. However, as Burton investigates the case, he begins to suspect that Chris Lee was killed because he violated a tribal taboo. The members of the tribe deny any involvement in the murder, but Burton is convinced that they are lying.
As Burton delves deeper into the mystery, he begins to experience strange and apocalyptic visions of water, including a massive flood that destroys the entire city of Sydney. These visions are connected to the aboriginal prophecies of a coming apocalypse that will be triggered by the violation of tribal laws.
As Burton becomes more involved with the aboriginal community, he begins to realize that he himself may be in danger. The aborigines believe that he is the "clever man," a spiritual leader who has been prophesied to help them survive the coming apocalypse. But Burton is increasingly skeptical of these beliefs, and begins to fear that his involvement with the aborigines may have disastrous consequences.
