The Last Temptation of Christ is a 1988 film directed by Martin Scorsese, based on the 1953 novel by Nikos Kazantzakis. The film explores the struggles that Jesus Christ (played by Willem Dafoe) faced as he carried out his mission to save mankind. It depicts Jesus as a human being grappling with doubt, fear, and temptation, rather than an infallible savior.

The film begins with Jesus working as a carpenter in Nazareth. He is visited by John the Baptist (played by Andre Gregory), who baptizes him and tells him that he is the son of God. Jesus is reluctant to accept this title, as he feels that he is unworthy.

Jesus becomes friends with a group of disciples, including Judas (played by Harvey Keitel), Mary Magdalene (played by Barbara Hershey), and Peter (played by Verna Bloom). They begin to follow Jesus as he preaches a message of love and compassion, but as they do so, they become increasingly frustrated with the Roman occupation of their land.

Judas becomes convinced that the only way to change the situation is through violent revolution. He convinces Jesus to join him in a plot to attack the Roman soldiers, but Jesus is hesitant and conflicted. He believes that love, not violence, is the path to salvation, and is torn between his desire to help his people and his commitment to his message of peace.

As Jesus continues his ministry, he faces many challenges. He is plagued by doubts and fears, and struggles to understand his purpose. He is tempted by the Devil (played by David Bowie), who offers him a chance to live a normal life, free from the burden of being the savior of mankind.

In the end, Jesus resists the temptation and carries out his mission to its conclusion. He is crucified, and dies on the cross, but in his dying moments, he experiences a vision of what his life could have been like if he had given in to the Devil's temptation. This vision, known as the "last temptation," shows Jesus living as a normal man, with a wife and children, but ultimately choosing to reject this life and accept his fate as the savior of mankind.

The Last Temptation of Christ was controversial upon its release, as many Christians felt that it portrayed Jesus in a negative light. However, it has since become recognized as a powerful exploration of the human side of Jesus, and of the struggles that he faced as he carried out his mission.
