The Last Right follows the journey of Daniel, a young man who accidentally finds himself responsible for the body of a stranger who has died next to him on a flight from New York to Ireland. The man, whose name is Padraig, had been returning to Ireland to reconcile with his estranged mother, who still lives in their family home on Rathlin Island.
Daniel decides to take on the responsibility of bringing Padraig's body to his final resting place, partly as a way of reconnecting with his own brother and reconciling their long-standing rivalry. Daniel's brother, a successful lawyer, is initially resistant to the idea but agrees to help on the condition that they make a detour to visit their aging father, who suffers from Alzheimer's disease and lives in a care home.
As they embark on the journey, they meet a young woman named Mary, who is also travelling to Rathlin Island and offers to accompany them. Along the way, the trio encounter various mishaps and challenges, including a run-in with the police and a flat tyre, which ground them for a while in a rural pub.
As the journey progresses, Daniel and Mary develop a romantic connection, while the brothers confront long-buried family secrets and grudges. They also face unexpected obstacles, including Padraig's disapproving mother, who opposes his funeral arrangements.
