The Unfinished Chase: Sheriff Down, Loot Gone

Western  United States of America

The Last Posse is a 1953 Western film directed by Alfred L. Werker and starring Broderick Crawford, John Derek, and Charles Bickford. The film follows a posse, led by Sheriff Kip Dowd (played by Broderick Crawford), as they pursue a group of bank robbers who have stolen $25,000 from a small town in Texas.

As the posse tracks the robbers, tensions begin to rise among the members, particularly between Dowd and the leader of the group, Frank Zachary (played by John Derek). Despite their disagreements, the posse manages to capture Zachary and two of his accomplices. However, when they return to town, they discover that the money is missing.

While investigating the theft, Dowd is shot by one of the posse members, who is revealed to be the true mastermind behind the robbery. The film ends with Dowd heading back out into the wilderness to continue his pursuit of the missing money and the remaining robbers.

The Last Posse received mixed reviews upon its release, with some critics praising the film's tense atmosphere and strong performances, particularly Broderick Crawford's portrayal of the determined sheriff. However, others criticized the film's uneven pacing and lack of character development for some of the supporting players. Despite these criticisms, the film remains a notable entry in the Western genre and a showcase for the talents of its lead actors.
