The Last Outlaw is a Western film released in 1993 and directed by Geoff Murphy. The movie stars Mickey Rourke, Dermot Mulroney, Steve Buscemi, John C. McGinley, and Ted Levine.
After the end of the Civil War, a group of former Confederate soldiers decide to rob a bank in order to make their fortune. The robbery goes awry, resulting in the death of some of the gang members and the capture of all the rest of them. The surviving members are sent to prison, where they serve out their sentences.
After being released from prison, the former soldiers reunite and decide to go into hiding and become bank robbers to make some money. They are led by Graff, their former commanding officer who has become a ruthless killer. Eustis, Graff's protégé, is his second in command and the voice of reason among the group.
As they begin their spree of bank robberies, they draw the attention of Marshal Sharp (Levine) and his deputy, Ezekiel (Buscemi). Sharp is a skilled lawman who has a personal vendetta against Graff, and Ezekiel is a young and inexperienced deputy who looks up to his mentor.
The tension between Graff and Eustis continues to grow as Graff becomes increasingly brutal and unpredictable. Eustis begins to question whether he wants to be a part of the gang anymore, especially when he falls in love with a woman who is also a victim of the gang.
The Last Outlaw is a gritty and violent Western that explores the themes of betrayal, redemption, and death. The performances from the cast, particularly Rourke and Mulroney, are strong and the action sequences are well-executed.
