The Last Full Measure is a 2019 war drama film directed by Todd Robinson and starring Sebastian Stan, Christopher Plummer, William Hurt, and Samuel L. Jackson. The movie tells the true story of Airman William H. Pitsenbarger Jr., an Air Force Pararescueman who is killed in action in the Vietnam War.
34 years later, in 1999, a Pentagon staffer named Scott Huffman (played by Sebastian Stan) is tasked with investigating Pitsenbarger's service and role in the battle of Xa Cam My, which had taken place on April 11, 1966. Huffman meets with numerous Vietnam War veterans, both those who fought alongside Pitsenbarger and those who survived because of him.
As Huffman delves deeper into Pitsenbarger's story, he discovers that Pits had saved the lives of numerous soldiers and was offered a chance to escape the battlefield, but instead chose to stay and continue rescuing others. Pitsenbarger was killed in the line of duty, and his actions saved the lives of at least nine American soldiers.
The Last Full Measure recounts Pitsenbarger's heroism and shows how his actions inspired numerous other soldiers to continue fighting and serving their country. The film also highlights the mental and emotional toll that combat can take on veterans, and the difficulties that many face in adjusting to civilian life after their service.
In addition to the stellar cast, The Last Full Measure features a moving score by composer Phillip Klein and beautiful cinematography that showcases the rugged beauty of Vietnam. The film reminds viewers that honor, courage, and sacrifice are still integral parts of America's military tradition, and that our veterans deserve our respect and gratitude for their service.
