The Last Command is a 1928 silent film directed by Josef von Sternberg. The movie revolves around a former Imperial Russian General named Sergius Alexander, played by Emil Jannings, who has fled to Hollywood after the Russian Revolution. In Hollywood, he is reduced to working as an extra in a movie being directed by a former revolutionary, Lev Andreyev, played by William Powell.

As Sergius struggles to adapt to his new life as a lowly extra, he remembers his past as a powerful military leader, and the film explores his memories of the events leading up to the revolution. As Sergius becomes increasingly disillusioned with his new life, a glamorous movie star named Natalie Dabrova, played by Evelyn Brent, takes an interest in him and offers to help him find a better role.

However, when Lev Andreyev discovers Sergius's true identity, he decides to use him as a pawn in a movie that will portray the downfall of the Russian nobility. As Sergius is forced to relive his past, he becomes increasingly unstable, leading to a dramatic confrontation with the director.

The Last Command is notable for its technical innovation and emotional depth, and it won Emil Jannings the first-ever Academy Award for Best Actor. The film explores themes of power, redemption, and the impact of historical events on personal identities.
