The Last Bus follows the journey of Tom, a widower in his seventies who has just lost his beloved wife, Mary. Looking to do something to honor her memory, Tom decides to take the free bus pass they had both received upon reaching the age of retirement and use it to travel the length of Britain from John O'Groats in Scotland to Land's End in Cornwall, the place where they were both born.
Tom's initial plan is to simply take in the sights and sounds of his journey, visiting places that held special meaning to him and Mary. However, he soon finds that his journey is full of surprises, both good and bad. Along the way, he meets a variety of colorful characters, including fellow travelers, bus drivers, and locals.
