The Last Big Save follows the life of professional hockey player, Derek Scott, who has a reputation of being a great player but also a troubled one. Derek is known for his on-ice skills, but off the ice, he is plagued with substance abuse and alcohol addiction, often causing problems for his team and his personal relationships.
Despite this, Derek signs a long-term contract that covers his entire career, hoping that it will provide some stability and motivation to overcome his demons. However, things quickly go downhill when he relapses and gets into trouble with the law. His team suspends him, and it seems like his career is over before it even started under the new contract.
With the support of his family and a former coach, Derek reluctantly enters rehab and starts to turn his life around. However, he knows that he has a lot to prove to his team and the fans who have been disappointed in him. He returns to the ice in the final month of his contract and, with some luck and skill, helps his team make it to the finals.
