The Great Day of the Flyers is an annual exhibition where young flying dinosaurs showcase their flying skills in the Great Valley. Petrie, a pterodactyl, is hesitant to participate because he feels like he doesn't fit in with the other flyers due to his unique flying style.
His friends, Littlefoot, Cera, Spike, and Ducky, encourage Petrie to embrace his individuality and use his unique flying abilities to stand out in the competition. Together, they practice flying in formation and Petrie learns to find ways to incorporate his own style into the routine.
However, Petrie's individualism causes some problems as he struggles to stay in formation during the exhibition. But with the support of his friends, he ultimately learns that it's okay to be different and that his unique perspective adds value to the group.
The movie also features a subplot involving a group of Spiketail dinosaurs who become stranded on an island and need rescuing. The Great Day of the Flyers becomes an opportunity for the flying dinosaurs to show off their skills and save their friends.
