The Ladykillers is a 2004 crime comedy film directed by Joel and Ethan Coen. The film features a group of eccentric criminals who plan a casino heist using the home of an unsuspecting elderly woman as their base of operations. The team is led by a charming Southern professor named Goldthwait Higginson Dorr III, who is played by Tom Hanks in one of his most memorable performances to date.
Dorr's crew consists of a cast of equally quirky characters, including a dim-witted heavy named Lump (played by Ryan Hurst), a foul-mouthed and violent cellist named Garth Pancake (played by J.K. Simmons), a sly and crafty explosives expert named Gawain MacSam (played by Marlon Wayans), and a sweet but clueless janitor named The General (played by Tzi Ma).
The film is a remake of the 1955 British comedy of the same name, and the Coen brothers put their own unique spin on the story, adding their trademark dark humor and offbeat characters to the mix. Throughout the film, Dorr and his crew go to great lengths to maintain their cover as a band, performing jazz music and wearing matching outfits, all while plotting their daring heist.
Meanwhile, the old woman who owns the home they are using as their hideout – played by Irma P. Hall – begins to suspect that something is amiss, but the bumbling criminals are always one step ahead.
As with many other Coen brothers films, The Ladykillers is full of twists and turns, and the audience is left constantly guessing as to what will happen next. The film received mixed reviews upon its release, but has since gained a cult following thanks to its quirky characters and offbeat humor.
