Amir, a successful author living in California, receives a call from an old friend in Afghanistan. The friend, Rahim Khan, pleads with Amir to return to his homeland and help him with a problem. Although initially hesitant, Amir decides to make the trip, partially motivated by a desire to finally atone for a terrible mistake he made as a child.
When Amir arrives in Afghanistan, he learns that Rahim Khan is dying and that he has a mission for Amir. Rahim Khan reveals that Hassan, Amir's childhood friend and servant, fathered a son named Sohrab. Unfortunately, Sohrab is now living in an orphanage and is in danger of being taken by the Taliban.
Amir sets out to find Sohrab and discovers that he is being held by a high-ranking member of the Taliban. Amir must use all of his wit and bravery to save Sohrab and bring him back to the safety of the United States.
Along the way, Amir is forced to confront his guilt over his past actions and his conflicted feelings towards Hassan and his family. Will Amir be able to make amends for his past mistakes and save Sohrab? The Kite Runner is a poignant and powerful story about redemption, friendship, and the human cost of war.
