Rupert Pupkin is a struggling comedian who dreams of becoming famous. He idolizes Jerry Langford, a popular late-night talk show host, and believes that he can only achieve his ambition by being a guest on the show. However, his attempts to get booked fail, and he eventually resorts to stalking Langford.
He begins to follow Jerry to his home and work, incessantly calling him and even kidnapping him for ransom. Throughout the film, Rupert's desperation to succeed in show business leads him to commit increasingly disturbing acts in pursuit of his goal.
The film depicts the darker side of the entertainment industry and the extremes that some people go to achieve fame. The King of Comedy is a satirical commentary on celebrity culture, obsession, and the lengths to which some individuals will go to achieve their dreams. The film stars Robert De Niro as Rupert Pupkin, Jerry Lewis as Jerry Langford, and Sandra Bernhard as Rupert's fanatical friend and accomplice, Masha.
