Alison Dodge is a rebellious teenager who has been raised by her mother, because her father left them when she was a child. After receiving her high school diploma, Alison decides to contact her father and spend the summer with him.
Upon arriving in Moonlight Bay, the town where her father lives, Alison is surprised to learn that he is an alcoholic who has lost his job and his wife. Despite this, Alison is determined to reconnect with him and help him get his life back on track.
Throughout the summer, Alison and her father try to bond, but there are many bumps along the way. Alison is frustrated by her father's drinking and lack of motivation, while her father is overwhelmed by his own guilt and shame for abandoning his family.
As they spend more time together, Alison learns more about her father's past and begins to understand why he left. She also begins to realize the deep-rooted pain and trauma that has led her father to his current state.
By the end of the summer, Alison and her father have grown closer and have both learned valuable lessons about forgiveness, redemption, and the importance of family.
