The King and I is a musical based on the novel Anna and the King of Siam by Margaret Landon. The story revolves around an English schoolteacher named Anna Leonowens who is hired by the King of Siam to teach his many children and wives. The two characters come from very different worlds, and their clash of cultures leads to tension, but ultimately, mutual respect and love. The musical features classic songs such as "Getting to Know You", "Whistle a Happy Tune", and "Shall We Dance". This production by Lincoln Center Theater was directed by Bartlett Sher and starred Kelli O'Hara as Anna and Ken Watanabe as the King. It premiered in New York in 2015 and won four Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical. The recording was made during a performance at the London Palladium in 2019 and was shown in cinemas around the world.
