Clara, played by Zoe Kazan, is a mother of two who flees from her abusive husband with her children. She arrives in New York with barely any money and her car gets towed away. She meets Alice, played by Andrea Riseborough, who works at a local diner and offers to help her and her kids by taking them to a nearby shelter.
At the shelter, Clara meets Jeffery, played by Caleb Landry Jones, a young man who is struggling with drug addiction and a troubled past. Meanwhile, Alice is dealing with her own personal demons, including a deteriorating relationship with her boyfriend.
As Clara and her sons struggle to survive in the shelter, she crosses paths with Marc, played by Tahar Rahim, the owner of the struggling Winter Palace restaurant. Marc has been given the chance to help save the restaurant from bankruptcy, but he needs to come up with some creative solutions to attract customers.
Clara begins stealing food from the restaurant, but instead of getting angry, Marc offers her a job and a chance to rebuild her life. Soon, other struggling individuals including Jeffery and Alice, find refuge at the Winter Palace and a supportive community begins to form.
As the group comes together, they begin to confront their past traumas, form new relationships, and help each other rebuild their lives. The Kindness of Strangers explores the power of compassion, empathy, and resilience in the face of adversity.
