Cosmo Vittelli is a middle-aged man who runs a night club in Los Angeles. He is a compulsive gambler and often finds himself in dire financial straits due to his addiction. One night, he loses a large amount of money in a poker game at an underground casino run by the local Mob. The casino owner, Mort, wants his money back, but Cosmo doesn't have it.
In exchange for wiping out Cosmo's debt, Mort asks him to do a "favor" for him - to kill a Chinese bookie who is stubbornly refusing to pay his debts to the Mob. Cosmo initially refuses, but when Mort threatens his life, he reluctantly agrees to do the job.
Cosmo enlists the help of his club's dancers and prostitutes to carry out the hit, but things don't go as planned. The hit goes wrong, and Cosmo ends up getting chased by the Mob as a result. He eventually finds himself holed up in a hotel room with the dancers, where he reflects on his life and his choices.
