The Keeper of Lost Causes is a Danish thriller film based on the first book of the Department Q novel series written by Jussi Adler-Olsen. The movie begins with the introduction of Carl Mørck, a homicide detective in Copenhagen who is recovering from a tragic incident that left one of his colleagues dead and another paralyzed. As a result, he is reassigned to head Department Q, a new division focused on investigating unsolved cases from years ago.
Mørck is initially reluctant to take on the case of Merete Lynggaard, who disappeared without a trace while traveling to Sweden with her brother, but eventually he becomes intrigued. He is joined in his investigation by his new assistant, Assad, a Syrian immigrant whose past experiences prove to be invaluable in solving the case.
As Mørck and Assad delve deeper into the disappearance of Merete Lynggaard, they uncover a web of corruption and deceit involving powerful people in Danish society. Along the way, they discover that Merete's disappearance is linked to a string of other crimes, including the murders of several young women.
The Keeper of Lost Causes is a gripping thriller that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats. The dynamic between Mørck and Assad is especially engaging, with their vastly different backgrounds and personalities complementing each other perfectly. The film received critical acclaim upon its release in Denmark in 2013, and was followed by two sequels, The Absent One and A Conspiracy of Faith, also based on the Department Q novels.
