Annie Laird (played by Demi Moore) is a single mother and a struggling artist who is selected as a juror in a high-profile case against mafia boss Louie Boffano (Tony Lo Bianco) for ordering a hit on a government informant. One of Boffano's henchmen, a ruthless hitman known as "the Teacher" (Alec Baldwin), approaches Annie outside the courthouse and threatens her son, Oliver, if she does not convince the other jurors to acquit Boffano.
Desperate to protect her son, Annie reluctantly agrees, and the trial ends in a not-guilty verdict. However, Annie soon realizes that the Teacher and his associates still pose a threat to her and Oliver. With the help of a detective named Eddie (James Gandolfini) and a fellow juror named Juliet (Anne Heche), Annie starts to investigate the mob's plans and gather evidence against them.
As the Teacher and his men close in on her, Annie sends Oliver to stay with her ex-husband in Europe. She also obtains a wiretap recording of the Teacher discussing their plan to kill her, but the only witness who can testify to its authenticity is murdered before he can speak. In a tense standoff, Annie confronts the Teacher and his men in her apartment, armed with a gun and the wiretap evidence. In the end, Annie kills the Teacher and his accomplices with the help of Eddie and Juliet, and makes peace with her ex-husband and Oliver.
