The Joys and Sorrows of Young Yuguo follows the journey of a 16-year-old Chinese boy named Yuguo, who becomes fascinated with Eastern European romantic poetry after coming across a book in his school library. He decides to embark on a pilgrimage to Romania's Carpathian Mountains, where many of his favorite poets hailed from.
After convincing his parents to let him go, Yuguo sets off on his journey, facing numerous challenges and cultural differences along the way. He meets people who help him navigate his way through Romania and learn more about its culture and history.
As Yuguo explores the region, he discovers the beauty of the landscape and the rich cultural heritage of the people who live there. He also encounters various characters, some of whom become his friends, and others who challenge his beliefs and worldview.
Through his travels, Yuguo gains a deeper understanding of himself and the world around him. He comes home with a renewed appreciation for the power of poetry and its ability to connect people from different cultures and backgrounds.
