The Journey of Natty Gann is a 1985 adventure film directed by Jeremy Paul Kagan. The movie is set in the United States during the Great Depression and follows the life of a young girl named Natty Gann (Meredith Salenger).
Natty lives with her father in Chicago, but when her father gets a job in Washington State, he has to leave her behind while he goes ahead to set up their new life. Natty is devastated but decides to leave home and go find her father herself.
She sets out on a journey across the country, hopping trains and encountering many dangers along the way. Her only companions on this journey are a magnificent, protective wolf, and a hardened drifter, Harry (John Cusack), who she meets on the road.
The trio is on the run, as Natty is pursued by local authorities who think she is a runaway. As she gets closer to reuniting with her father, Natty learns about independence, self-reliance, and surviving in tough times.
