Nick Starkey is a former New York City detective who was forced out of the police force due to a scandal involving him and a high-profile case. Now, several years later, a serial killer is on the loose and the police department is desperate for leads. Frank Starkey, Nick's brother and a high-ranking member of the police force, convinces the commissioner to bring Nick back to assist with the investigation.
As Nick begins to investigate, he uncovers a web of bribery and corruption within the police force. He also discovers that the killer is targeting young women who work in the art world. Nick enlists the help of his friend Ed, a painter who knows the art world well, to help him track down the killer.
Meanwhile, Frank's wife Christine becomes involved in the case, causing tension between the brothers. Nick also begins to suspect that the killer is targeting his own family. As the investigation intensifies, Nick must lay a trap for the killer without the help of the police department, using Ed and his own expertise to catch the killer before it's too late.
The January Man stars Kevin Kline as Nick, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio as Christine, and Harvey Keitel as Frank. It was directed by Pat O'Connor and released in 1989. Despite an all-star cast and promising premise, the movie was a critical and commercial flop.
