The In-Laws is a 2003 action-comedy film directed by Andrew Fleming. The movie begins with the wedding of Melissa Peyser (played by Lindsay Sloane) and Mark Tobias (played by Ryan Reynolds), whose father, Steve Tobias (played by Albert Brooks), is a mild-mannered podiatrist. The wedding is supposed to be a simple affair until Jerry Peyser (played by Michael Douglas), Melissa's father and an undercover CIA agent, arrives with a bang.
Steve and Jerry soon meet, and Jerry convinces Steve to take a ride in his classic sports car. During the ride, Jerry reveals that he is a CIA agent on a mission to intercept a French arms dealer to whom the Tobias' new in-laws are trying to sell a stolen nuclear submarine's guidance system. The in-laws include their daughter Angela (played by Candice Bergen) and her husband, Jean-Pierre Thibodoux (played by David Suchet), who turns out to be the international smuggler.
As the situation becomes complicated, Jerry and Steve are forced to go to France to try to stop the sale of the stolen nuclear submarine guidance system. Along the way, they become embroiled in a series of explosive situations, including a boat chase, a car chase, and a dangerous scuba dive.
The In-Laws is a hilarious adventure of two unlikely in-laws as they work together to stop international smugglers and save their children's wedding. The film received mixed reviews but was praised for the performances of Brooks and Douglas.
