The Infernal Trio is a French crime drama film directed by Francis Girod and released in 1974. The film is set in Marseilles in 1919 and is based on the true story of serial killer Georges Sarret, who along with his two female accomplices, murdered several people for their insurance money.
Georges Sarret is played by Michel Piccoli and Philomène Schmidt is played by Romy Schneider. The film follows their devious scheme as they marry off young women to old men and then kill the old men to collect their life insurance payouts. Apart from being motivated by money, Georges is also drawn to the power he wields over the young women he marries off.
When an accomplice in the scheme, Marcel Chambon, played by Gérard Depardieu, threatens to blackmail them, Georges and his two lovers have no option but to kill him and his mistress. The film then takes a dark turn as the trio's crimes are investigated by the police.
The film received widespread critical acclaim upon its release and is regarded as one of the greatest French crime dramas of all time. The performances of the lead actors, particularly Romy Schneider, were praised. The film's cinematography and score were also given high marks.
