In the movie The Independent, detectives Michael and Rebecca are assigned to investigate a secret military experiment gone wrong. The experiment involved five prisoners who were kept awake for thirty days in a sealed gas chamber, with the aim of testing the effects of sleep deprivation on human beings.
As the detectives delve deeper into the case, they uncover disturbing evidence of unethical behavior by the military scientists involved in the experiment. They also discover that one of the prisoners, a man named Kyle, survived the ordeal and is now living on the streets, suffering from severe psychological trauma.
As Michael and Rebecca try to piece together what happened in the gas chamber, they are also forced to confront their own personal demons. Michael is struggling with addiction and a troubled past, while Rebecca is dealing with the fallout from a failed relationship.
