Comedy,Drama,History,Romance  France,United Kingdom,United States of America

The Importance of Being Earnest is a comedic play written by Oscar Wilde in 1895. The story follows two young men, Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff, who use the aliases of "Ernest" to escape their respectable lives in the country and have a bit of fun in London.

Jack is in love with Gwendolen Fairfax, who insists she can only love a man named Ernest. Algernon, intrigued by Jack's life in the country, decides to visit Jack's estate pretending to be Ernest. While there, he meets Jack's ward, Cecily Cardew, and falls in love with her.

The plot thickens when Gwendolen's mother, Lady Bracknell, discovers that Jack was adopted as a baby and cannot marry her daughter without knowing his true identity. Meanwhile, Cecily's governess, Miss Prism, mistakenly gives Jack's real name to Algernon, who realizes that Jack is, in fact, his friend Ernest.

The final act sees the characters unraveling their true identities and resolving their misunderstandings. Jack discovers that he was actually Lady Bracknell's long-lost nephew and is finally able to propose to Gwendolen. Algernon, after some convincing, is able to win over Cecily and they too become engaged. The play ends with the characters coming to realize the importance of being earnest in both love and life.
