Despite overwhelming evidence of his innocence, including the recantation of witnesses and key evidence that was withheld from the defense, he is sentenced to life in prison.

Throughout his time in prison, Rubin never loses his faith and continues to fight for justice. He catches the attention of an African-American teenager named Lesra (played by Vicellous Reon Shannon), who is being taught to read by a group of Canadians. Lesra becomes convinced of Rubin's innocence and sets out to help him regain his freedom. The movie highlights the injustices that Rubin faced, the racism that permeated the criminal justice system, and the perseverance he exhibited in his fight for freedom. The Hurricane received critical acclaim, with Denzel Washington earning an Academy Award nomination for his portrayal of Rubin Carter. The movie is a poignant and inspiring tale of the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
