In the movie The Hunter, Martin (played by Willem Dafoe) is a skilled mercenary who is hired by a biotech company to track down the last remaining Tasmanian tiger, believed to hold valuable genetic material that could revolutionize genetic engineering.
Martin travels to Tasmania posing as a university researcher and is set up in a remote cabin owned by a family still grieving the disappearance of their father and husband in the nearby wilderness.
As Martin delves deeper into the wilderness with his guide, he faces challenges from the harsh terrain, unpredictable weather, and hostile locals who resent the outsiders' invasion of their land.
Despite his initial skepticism about the existence of the Tasmanian tiger, Martin becomes increasingly drawn to the mystery of the animal and the secrets it holds. Along the way, he builds a relationship with the family at the cabin and develops a respect for their way of life.
However, Martin is not the only one in pursuit of the tiger. Other parties with motives ranging from conservation to greed are also searching for the animal, setting up a tense showdown in the wilderness.
As Martin approaches his goal, he must confront his own motives and the ethical implications of his mission while navigating the dangers and complexities of a land and people he does not fully understand.
