In the movie, Miriam Blaylock (played by Catherine Deneuve) is a vampire who has lived for centuries and has taken lovers throughout that time. She promises them eternal life, but in reality, she can only sustain two lovers at a time, and they eventually age and wither away, leaving her alone.

John Blaylock (played by David Bowie) is Miriam's current companion, and they have been together for centuries. However, John suddenly begins to age rapidly, much to Miriam's dismay. She desperately tries to find a solution, but cannot, and eventually leaves John to die.

Distraught and seeking answers, John seeks out Dr. Sarah Roberts (played by Susan Sarandon), a researcher on the mechanisms of aging. She initially dismisses his claims of immortality and aging, but eventually becomes intrigued and investigates further.

In the meantime, Miriam takes a new lover, Alice Cavender (played by Beth Ehlers), but the same fate befalls her.

As the movie progresses, Sarah and John form a romantic relationship, and she starts to uncover the truth behind Miriam's immortality. She also discovers a potential cure for John's aging, but it comes with a deadly catch.
