The Hunger Games takes place in a dystopian future where the United States has been replaced by the nation of Panem, which is ruled by a tyrannical government based in the Capitol. The Capitol controls the 12 surrounding districts by forcing them to provide resources and labor, while keeping the districts impoverished and powerless.
The Hunger Games themselves are an annual event designed to remind the districts of their powerlessness. Each district must randomly select one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 to represent them in a fight to the death. The victor will be rewarded with fame and fortune, while their district will receive additional resources and privileges.
The story follows Katniss Everdeen, a 16-year-old girl from District 12 who volunteers to take her younger sister's place in the games. She is joined by Peeta Mellark, a boy from her district who has long had a crush on her. Together, they are mentored by Haymitch Abernathy, a former Hunger Games victor who is now a drunken recluse.
As they navigate the treacherous arena, Katniss and Peeta must outsmart and outmaneuver the other tributes, some of whom have been trained their entire lives for this event. Katniss must also navigate her complex feelings for Peeta, as well as her sense of duty to her family and her district.
Ultimately, Katniss and Peeta emerge victorious from the games, but they must continue to fight against the Capitol's oppression in the following two books of the trilogy. The series explores themes such as survival, sacrifice, inequality, and the corrupting influence of power.
