Coleman Silk is a former professor of classics at a New England university. He is well-respected and esteemed in academic circles, but his career comes to an abrupt end when he is accused of uttering a racial slur in class. Silk vehemently denies the accusation, but the damage is done, and he is forced into early retirement.
Silk's friend and colleague, Nathan Zuckerman, is intrigued by the case and decides to investigate further.
