The Human Condition I: No Greater Love is a 1959 Japanese film directed by Masaki Kobayashi. It is based on a six-volume novel by Jumpei Gomikawa. The film follows the story of Kaji (played by Tatsuya Nakadai), a pacifist and socialist, who works as a manager in a coal mine during World War II.

Kaji initially tries to avoid conscription into the army by taking on a job that is critical to the war effort. As the war progresses, Kaji becomes more involved in the war effort, despite his pacifist ideals. He is seen as a traitor by other Japanese soldiers and is subjected to insults, beatings, and torture. Kaji is eventually drafted into the army and sent to the front lines.

Despite the horrors of war, Kaji maintains his moral convictions and tries to protect the lives of his fellow soldiers. He also tries to help a group of Chinese prisoners of war, and this brings him into conflict with the Japanese military authorities.

The film explores the themes of war, human nature, loyalty, and morality. It is one of the most celebrated Japanese films of all time and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1961. The Human Condition I: No Greater Love was followed by two sequels, The Human Condition II: Road to Eternity and The Human Condition III: A Soldier's Prayer.
