The Horse Whisperer follows the story of Annie, a young girl who is traumatized after a tragic horse riding accident that leaves her and her horse badly injured. Annie's mother, a high-powered magazine editor, enlists the help of Tom Booker, the titular horse whisperer played by Redford, to help heal both Annie and her horse.
As Tom begins to work with the horse, he also starts to form a connection with Annie, helping her come to terms with the accident and the emotional trauma that followed. Along the way, some of the other characters also discover their own inner turmoil, including Annie's mother and Tom's love interest Grace.
The film is known for its sweeping shots of the rugged Montana countryside and Redford's understated yet powerful performance as the enigmatic Tom Booker. It also features a memorable score by Thomas Newman and a star-studded cast including Kristen Scott Thomas, Sam Neill, and a young Scarlett Johansson in one of her early film roles.
