The Holy Mountain is a visually stunning and surreal journey that defies easy explanation or interpretation. The film opens with an extended sequence featuring a group of wealthy industrialists ritually sacrificing a herd of sheep in order to divinate their financial futures. We are then introduced to the Alchemist, who recruits a diverse cast of characters to participate in his mystical quest. These include a blind beggar, a hermaphrodite, a tattooed woman, and a man who has had his arms and legs amputated.
The Alchemist puts his recruits through a series of bizarre and often disturbing rituals designed to strip them of their egos and attachments to the mundane world. These include donning animal masks and engaging in orgiastic rites, ingesting various drugs, and undergoing painful surgeries. Once the group has been sufficiently purified, they embark on a journey to Lotus Island, where they hope to gain enlightenment by climbing the eponymous Holy Mountain.
The journey is fraught with danger and surreal encounters, including a group of soldiers who capture and torture the group, a temple where a man is crucified and then dismembered, and encounters with immortals who reside at the top of the mountain. Throughout the film, the imagery is often shocking and grotesque, with scenes of nudity, drug use, violence, and blasphemy.
Despite its controversial and transgressive content, The Holy Mountain is widely regarded as a masterpiece of avant-garde cinema, with its striking visuals, inventive use of symbolism, and profound themes of spiritual transcendence and the illusion of reality.
