The curmudgeonly instructor, Mr. Wilson, is unhappy about being stuck on campus during Christmas break, especially when he's forced to spend time with the troubled and rebellious student, Jake. However, as the days pass, Mr. Wilson and Jake begin to understand each other and develop a friendship based on their shared struggles and difficult pasts.
At the same time, Mr. Wilson starts to bond with the head cook, Mrs. Marlow, who is grieving the loss of her son in Vietnam. As they spend time together in the school kitchen, they find comfort in each other's company and begin to heal from their respective losses.
As the three of them spend more time together, they form an unlikely family unit, providing support and understanding for each other during a time of year that can be especially difficult for those who are alone or dealing with personal struggles. Through their bond, they come to realize that they are not as alone as they once thought and that they can find strength and solace in the connections they have made with each other.
