Jim and Grace are on their way to California to spend their spring break together when they come across the hitchhiker, John Ryder. Initially reluctant to pick him up, they eventually give in and let him into their car. However, it quickly becomes clear that John is not a harmless traveler in need of a ride. He starts to terrorize the couple, threatening them with a knife and making gruesome references to his past crimes.
Jim manages to fight back and throws John out of the car, but as soon as they think they are free of him, John reappears and starts to murder people in the towns they pass through. Jim and Grace become suspects in the killings and are pursued by the police, but also by John who seems to be obsessed with tormenting them.
As the movie progresses, John's motivations and background remain shrouded in mystery, but it becomes clear that he is a dangerous and unpredictable killer who enjoys toying with his victims. Jim and Grace must find a way to escape John's clutches before it is too late, and uncover the truth behind his madness.
