The Heavenly Kid is a 1985 comedy-drama film directed by Cary Medoway. The film features Bobby Fantana, who dies in a car accident and is assigned to become a guardian angel. Bobby does not qualify for Heaven right away, and he needs to prove himself by helping out the living.
Bobby's first job as an angel is to help Lenny Barnes, a high school student who suffers from unrequited love. Lenny is in love with the beautiful Sharon, but she doesn't even know he exists. Lenny becomes so distraught that he decides to end his life.
Bobby takes on the task of saving Lenny's life by pretending to be a ghost. He then dresses Lenny in slick clothes, teaches him how to be confident and cool, and changes his name to "Buddy." With Bobby's help, Lenny easily wins over Sharon, and the two start dating.
As Lenny becomes a successful playboy, he realizes that he is not happy with this superficial lifestyle. He discovers that Sharon is not the person he thought she was and starts to see the value in being true to himself.
Bobby thinks his job is done after Lenny's transformation, but he soon realizes that Lenny's mother is his ex-girlfriend, Emily. Bobby struggles with his feelings for Emily while attempting to help Lenny find true happiness.
In the end, Lenny discovers the truth about Bobby's identity and realizes that his guardian angel has been helping him all along. Lenny and Emily reconcile, and Bobby finally earns his place in Heaven.
