The Haunting is a 1999 horror film directed by Jan de Bont, starring Liam Neeson, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Owen Wilson, and Lili Taylor. Dr. David Marrow, a psychologist, invites three people - Nell Vance, Theo, and Luke Sanderson - to Hill House, a creepy old mansion in the countryside. Marrow tells them that he is conducting a study on sleep disorders and that he wants to observe them while they sleep.

As soon as they arrive at Hill House, strange things start to happen. The house seems to be alive and haunted by its troubled past. Nell, who is sensitive and empathic, instantly feels a connection with the house. Theo, an artist, is skeptical of the whole thing but soon realizes that Hill House is unlike any other place. Luke, a playboy, is more interested in Theo than the supernatural.

As the night progresses, the guests experience terrifying visions and hallucinations, which Marrow uses to gather data for his study. Nell, in particular, is deeply affected by the house's malevolent presence. She starts to uncover some of the house's dark secrets and realizes that her own past is linked to the mansion.

As the guests try to leave Hill House, they are stopped by Marrow, who reveals his true intentions. He only wanted to use them to prove that Hill House is haunted and that he is not crazy. However, things take a dark turn, and the guests are forced to fight for their lives against the house's evil forces.

The Haunting is a modern retelling of Shirley Jackson's classic novel, The Haunting of Hill House. While it received mixed reviews upon its release, it has gained a cult following over the years for its atmospheric visuals and creepy sound design.
