Ivanhoe Martin, played by Jimmy Cliff, is the main character of the movie. He arrives in Kingston with hopes of making it as a musician, but quickly realizes that life in the city is not easy. He struggles to find work and is forced to sleep on the streets.
After meeting a girl named Elsa, played by Janet Bartley, Ivanhoe lands a recording contract with a local producer named Hilton. However, Hilton takes advantage of him, paying him only a fraction of what he's owed for his music and making promises he can't keep.
When Ivanhoe confronts Hilton about the money, he is told that he has no choice but to accept the deal. Frustrated and broke, Ivanhoe turns to selling marijuana to make ends meet.
Things take a violent turn when Ivanhoe is harassed by two corrupt policemen who try to extort money from him. In self-defense, he kills both policemen and goes into hiding. The public believes he is a hero for standing up against police corruption, and his music becomes even more popular.
However, Ivanhoe's notoriety comes at a price. He is eventually caught by the police and sentenced to death by hanging. The movie ends with Ivanhoe being led to the gallows, singing "The Harder They Come" defiantly and proudly.
