The Doctor in question is Joseph Frail, played by Gary Cooper. He is a skilled physician who has made a home for himself in a remote gold mining town in Montana. Joseph is respected by the locals because he has saved many lives and is known for his kind and gentle nature.
One day, a young man named Rune (played by Ben Piazza) is caught stealing gold and is subsequently accused of murder. The townspeople grab Rune and begin to form a lynch mob, determined to hang him for his crimes.
Joseph intervenes and manages to save Rune from the mob. He takes the young man back to his clinic, where he tends to his wounds and helps him recover. Over time, Joseph forms a strong bond with Rune and begins to see potential in him.
However, Joseph also sees an opportunity to exploit Rune's past as a criminal. He convinces Rune to work for him as a sort of indentured servant, promising to keep him safe and provide for him in exchange for his services.
As Rune begins to trust Joseph more and more, he starts to see him as a father figure. But as time passes, Joseph's true nature is revealed. He becomes increasingly controlling and manipulative, using his power over Rune to get what he wants.
Ultimately, Joseph's desire for control and greed leads him down a dark path, and he must confront his own demons in order to find redemption.
