Guernsey's Literary Society: A Uniting Delight

Romance,Drama,History  United Kingdom,United States of America,France

The movie is set in 1946, shortly after the end of World War II. Juliet Ashton, played by Lily James, is a writer based in London, who is searching for inspiration for her next book. She receives a letter from a man named Dawsey Adams who lives on the island of Guernsey, in the Channel Islands, off the coast of France.

Dawsey explains that he found Juliet's name in a second-hand book, and that he is a member of a literary society on the island. The group was formed during the war, when the island was occupied by German forces, as a way for the residents to share books, discuss them, and maintain their spirits.

Juliet becomes intrigued by the story of the society, and decides to visit Guernsey to learn more about it, despite the objections of her publisher and boyfriend, Mark Reynolds. She arrives on the island and is welcomed by the members of the society, including Dawsey, played by Michiel Huisman, and Amelia Maugery, played by Penelope Wilton.

As Juliet spends time with the society members, she learns about their experiences during the war, including the heartbreaking story of Elizabeth McKenna, played by Jessica Brown Findlay, a former member of the society who was arrested and sent to a concentration camp.

Juliet also develops a romantic connection with Dawsey, despite her relationship with Mark. She begins to write a book about the society and its members, which brings up painful memories for some, but also helps them find closure and healing.

The movie explores themes of love, friendship, loss, and resilience, and features stunning scenery of the island of Guernsey. It is based on the novel of the same name by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows.
