Directed by Steven Luke, The Great War is a 2019 war drama film set in November 1918. The movie follows a group of American soldiers who are sent to rescue a lost platoon of African American soldiers, who vanished during a secret mission in the Argonne Forest during the final days of World War I.
The group of soldiers, led by Major Buxton (played by Ron Perlman), encounters a wide range of hazards as they brave the enemy lines in search of the lost platoon. They soon come up against a German battalion led by a ruthless commander, Major Erich (played by Billy Zane), who is determined to stop the Americans from finding the missing soldiers.
The film also sheds light on the struggles and injustices faced by African American soldiers during World War I, including racism and discrimination from their fellow white soldiers. In particular, the lost platoon had been assigned to a difficult and dangerous mission due to their skin color, and were subsequently abandoned when things went wrong.
