The Great Escaper follows the story of 95-year-old Tom, a former British paratrooper who is determined to attend the 70th anniversary commemoration of the D-Day landings in Normandy. Despite his advanced age and declining health, Tom is unwavering in his desire to pay tribute to his fallen comrades and to honor the sacrifices made during the war. However, his caregivers at the care home are adamantly against the idea, fearing for his safety and well-being.
Undeterred, Tom hatches a plan to escape from the care home and make the journey to Normandy on his own. With the help of a group of unlikely allies including a rebellious young caregiver and a fellow resident with a penchant for mischief, Tom sets out on a road trip across Europe, evading authorities and facing numerous challenges along the way. As they travel, Tom shares his wartime experiences with his companions, imparting wisdom and forging deep connections with them.
