Troy Gable, played by Colin Hanks, is a law school dropout who is struggling to find a direction in life. When he answers an advertisement for a personal assistant, he finds himself working for Buck Howard, a once-famous magician who is now struggling to make a comeback.
Buck Howard, played by John Malkovich, is a proud and stubborn man who refuses to admit that his career is in decline. He travels from town to town, performing in small theaters and hotels, hoping to regain his former glory.
Troy quickly learns that working for Buck is no easy task. Buck is demanding and temperamental, often taking out his frustrations on Troy. Despite this, Troy becomes fascinated by Buck's determination and perseverance.
As they travel across the country, staging one performance after another, Troy begins to see a transformation in Buck. He becomes less bitter and more open to new ideas. Troy even develops a friendship with Valerie, a publicist who is also involved in Buck's comeback.
In the end, Buck's comeback performance is a success, but more importantly, he learns to appreciate the people in his life and acknowledges his own limitations. Through his experiences working for Buck, Troy gains a new perspective on life and finds his own path forward.
