Benjamin, played by Dustin Hoffman, is a recent college graduate who is unsure about his future and direction in life. He returns home to California and is seduced by Mrs. Robinson, a middle-aged family friend who is unhappy with her loveless marriage. Despite his initial reluctance, Benjamin begins an affair with Mrs. Robinson, leading to a secret and emotionally confusing relationship.

As this affair is ongoing, Benjamin is set up by Mrs. Robinson's husband on a date with their daughter, Elaine, played by Katharine Ross. Elaine is initially uninterested in the awkward Benjamin but eventually sees past his uncertainty and they begin a genuine and romantic relationship.

When Mrs. Robinson finds out about the relationship between her daughter and Benjamin, she becomes outraged and tries to put a stop to it. However, Benjamin is genuinely in love with Elaine and fights to be with her.

The Graduate explores themes of generational differences, young adulthood, and the search for meaning in a society that seems to have lost its direction. The film is considered a classic of American cinema and was directed by Mike Nichols, with a soundtrack by Simon & Garfunkel.
