In The Good German, the journalist, Jake Geismer, is played by George Clooney. He arrives in Berlin to cover the Potsdam negotiations, where leaders of the Allied powers are discussing the reorganization of Germany after the war. As he investigates the murder of the GI, he becomes caught up in a web of political intrigue, involving both former Nazis and the occupying powers.
Meanwhile, Geismer reconnects with his pre-war lover, Lena (played by Cate Blanchett), who is now married to a prominent scientist, Emil Brandt (played by Christian Oliver). Geismer learns that Lena is now working for the American government, but she is also involved in shady dealings with the Russians. As Geismer delves deeper into the murder case, he begins to uncover secrets that Lena is desperately trying to keep hidden.
The film is set in a post-war Berlin that is still reeling from the devastation of the war. Director Steven Soderbergh chose to shoot the movie in black and white, using vintage cameras and lighting techniques to give the film a classic film noir feel. The Good German is a stylish and suspenseful thriller that combines elements of historical drama with a classic murder mystery.
