Stolen Art Leads to Life of Crime in The Goldfinch

Crime,Drama  United States of America

The Goldfinch is a 2019 drama film based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name by Donna Tartt. The film stars Ansel Elgort as the protagonist, Theo, with Nicole Kidman, Oakes Fegley, and Jeffrey Wright in supporting roles. The movie begins with a young Theo and his mother visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City when a bomb explodes, killing his mother and several others.

In a state of shock, Theo swipes the painting he and his mother had been admiring, Carel Fabritius' "The Goldfinch," before narrowly escaping the museum. He winds up in the care of the wealthy Barbour family, headed by the elegant Samantha (Kidman), who live in a sprawling Park Avenue apartment.

As Theo struggles to acclimate to his new surroundings and grieve his mother's death, the priceless painting becomes a symbol of his trauma. The film jumps ahead eight years as Theo has grown into a troubled young adult (played by Elgort), still haunted by his mother's death and the theft of the painting.

When he reunites with his childhood friend, Boris (Aneurin Barnard), Theo is pulled into a dangerous world of crime and starts selling counterfeit antiques in Las Vegas. Amidst all of this, he is still hiding the stolen painting.

As the film unfolds, Theo's past catches up with him, and he must confront his guilt, addiction, and the people he has hurt along the way. The Goldfinch is a poignant and visually stunning tale of loss, love, and redemption that ultimately culminates in the painting's fate and Theo's journey of healing.
