The Glass Key is a 1942 film noir directed by Stuart Heisler and starring Alan Ladd, Veronica Lake, and Brian Donlevy. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Dashiell Hammett and is considered one of the best adaptations of his work.
The plot of the film centers around the relationship between Paul Madvig (Donlevy), a corrupt politician, and Ed Beaumont (Ladd), his loyal right-hand man. Madvig is in the process of cleaning up his reputation and aligning himself with the reformist politician Ralph Henry (Moroni Olsen) when Taylor Henry (Richard Denning), Ralph's son and Madvig’s rival for the affections of Opal (Lake), is found dead.
The murder investigation is led by Lieutenant Ed J. Gately (William Bendix), who is convinced that Madvig is responsible for Taylor’s death. However, Beaumont believes that Madvig is innocent and begins his own investigation to clear his boss’s name. As Beaumont digs deeper, he uncovers a web of deceit and corruption involving Nick Varna (Joseph Calleia), a powerful gangster who has ties to Madvig.
Varna uses his influence to force Clyde Matthews (Bonita Granville), the publisher of The Observer newspaper, to run articles implicating Madvig in Taylor’s murder. Matthews is torn between her loyalty to Madvig and her desire to publish a sensational story that could boost her newspaper’s sales.
As the investigation unfolds, Beaumont and Madvig find themselves in a dangerous game of cat and mouse with Varna and his ruthless henchmen. With the help of Opal and Gately, they must unravel the truth behind Taylor’s murder before Madvig is falsely accused and Varna takes control of the city’s criminal underworld.
