The Giver Movie Summary

Unveiling Life's Hidden Colors

Drama,Science Fiction  United States of America

The Giver is a science fiction movie that is based on Lois Lowry's book of the same title. The story is set in a utopian community where everyone lives in harmony and without any negative emotions or experiences. This community is controlled by Elders who have eliminated pain, choice, and any type of individual differentiation or diversity.

The main character of the movie is a young boy named Jonas, who is selected to be the Receiver of Memory. It is the most important role in the community, and the person who holds this position is entrusted with keeping the memories of the past. This knowledge is kept away from the rest of the community.

The current Receiver of Memory, The Giver (played by Jeff Bridges), starts to train Jonas in the many memories of the past, both good and bad. These memories expose Jonas to the world of emotions, pain, love, and joy that exist beyond the controlled surroundings of his community. At times, Jonas finds the newly acquired experiences difficult to comprehend, but slowly he understands the reality and the cruelty of the world beyond the insulated community.

However, Jonas realizes that the Elders have separated themselves from this reality for a reason. They want to avoid conflict, discrimination, and suffering, which lead to the creation of the controlled community in the first place. Jonas determines to change the system, but it comes with a price.

The Giver grows old, and Jonas realizes that he must now take on this responsibility. When he does, it affects the entire community, and the unknown future of how things will unfold becomes a theme of the film.
