Ben Shockley, played by Clint Eastwood, is a washed-up cop with a drinking problem and a tarnished reputation. He is given a last chance at redeeming himself when he is assigned the task of escorting Gus Mally, played by Sondra Locke, from Las Vegas to Phoenix to testify against her former employers.
Initially, Shockley thinks it will be an easy ride, but things quickly go wrong. Mally is a tough, no-nonsense woman who refuses to cooperate. She constantly pushes Shockley's buttons and tests his patience. To make matters worse, the mob is after her, and they will stop at nothing to silence her before she can testify.
As they hit the road, the two face numerous obstacles and challenges, including corrupt police officers who are working with the mob, a helicopter attack, and a daring escape from a speeding train.
Throughout their journey, Shockley and Mally develop a grudging respect for each other, and as the danger escalates, they realize they have to put their differences aside and work together if they want to survive.
